Overview
In areas where district cooling is available, the District Cooling Operator provides chilled water to buildings. In the absence of chilled water submetering infrastructure, the owner incurs the total cooling consumption cost for the building. This cost is then allocated to tenants as a service charge based on unit floor area rather than actual consumption.
What is BTU Submetering?
This process involves installing metering devices to measure the real-time consumption of supplied chilled water in a building. These devices, known as BTU submeters, calculate the thermal energy used by monitoring the temperature difference and flow rate of the chilled water entering and leaving the cooling system.
Why does it help?
It acts as an essential component of a client’s billing cycle. Providing precise energy measurements allows customers to monitor consumption patterns, detect HVAC system issues early, and make informed decisions to optimize usage, leading to cost savings and improved energy efficiency.
